The Warrego township was established with the commencement of mine operations in the late 1950s. With the closing of the mining operation in 1999, the student catchment for the school extended to the Mungalawarru community, 36kms from town.
The school featured in the 2005 SBS television documentary, 'Bush School', about teachers Colin and Sandra Baker who worked with Mungalawarru community elder, Colin Freddie from 1999 - 2006, to teach students how to ride, which resulted in 100% attendance rate, achieved national literacy and numeracy benchmarks, as well as improvement in health outcomes.
